Lanique Dawson is an  African American, high school Junior attending Manhattan Center for Science and Math. Lanique was born and raised in The Bronx but she spends her time in the city taking on college courses, such as the Advanced Science Research program (ASR), which consists of writing grant proposals and creating experiments under Scientist from New York City and worldwide by participating with the International Student and Teacher Exchange Program.  As a participant of the Urban Barcoding Program, which involves Lanique to work with youth from all 5 boughs of New York City, she spends her weekends collecting samples in the field.  During her free time Lanique takes classes at Columbia University as a participant in the program, Double Discovery.
